If you own a business, and you're reading this, you probably want someone to do your taxes, preferably, someone good. You may be operating as a corporation, a partnership or an LLC. You might operate as a sole proprietorship and only need a P&L for your Schedule "C" attached to your personal 1040.
Before doing your taxes, it's imperative that your business have accurate records. An important question, therefore, is have your books been kept accurately by yourself, or your bookkeeper, or do they need a thorough going over first?
Generally, a business owner who does not make use of an accoutant during the year needs their books corrected to some extent. We've found that even the most experienced bookkeeper needs help with the tricky stuff. This is where we come in.
Some of the questions we ask are the following:
Have you used QuickBooks or a similar software to keep track of all receipts and disbursements or do you use a spreadsheet? Are you operating out of a check book only and accounting must be recapped for a whole year?
Were Bank Reconciliations done to verify all transactions are in the records?
Were disbursements split when they included different expense types?
If you used a credit card, was each charge entered separately off of the credit card?
Did you mix personal and business expenditures in your records? Have you already segregated all such expenses from business expenses?
When you had expenses like travel, meals and entertainment, gifts, insurances, did you know how to treat each, tax-wise, and record them appropriately?
Did you buy furniture and equipment? Are these clearly identified so depreciation can be figured correctly?
Did you use an auto or truck for business? What has been done to track these expenses? Was any personal portion already adjusted for?
If this is not your first year in business, do you have a depreciation schedule for prior accumulated depreciation or amortization?
Do you have payroll? If os, can you furnish payroll tax returns, an earnings register and a list of tax deposits you made?
This list above is intended to point out that most tax returns are not simple "fill in" jobs in which we take your totals, crank out a return, and sign it. It really all depends on the quality of your records.
We are very interested to help small businesses get organized and begin to do things "by the book." If you've been trying to go it alone for many years, but feel the time is right to make a change and do things right, give us a call. Whatever your situation, trust us, we've seen it before.
